Cheering For Caitlin

In honor of Caitlin Downing
2007 - 2012

Caitlin Downing was born on May 17th, 2007. She was diagnosed with a Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG), a rare and inoperable brain tumor, on January 13th, 2012, just five months shy of her 5th birthday.

Just 10 months later Caitlin earned her wings and will be forever five.

Denise Downing, Caitlin's mother, much like other parents of children stricken with DIPG, has become a vocal advocate and supporter of more research.  In Denise's own words, she fights for funding for research for the following reason;

“I hope the outcome is that someday, that pediatric neuro-oncologist is going to sit across from a set of parents and she’s going to hand them that first blow. She’s going to say, ‘Your child has a brain tumor.’ Those parents are going to panic,” says Downing. “But she’s not going to deliver the second blow, because she’s not going to say, ‘We don’t know how to treat that.’ Instead, she will say, ‘We know how to cure that.’”
